Dialogue with the Jetty: A Unique Public Space Design

Creating a Tranquil Oasis Along Lake Geneva

The floor planks have different lengths to allow for the sculpting of benches to evoke wooden rocks where visitors can relax. The benches are germane to the space and essential to the philosophy of the project: to offer to the public a diversity of uses bounded only by their imagination. A mobile footbridge is the capstone to the project. Flat it becomes a seamless part of the walkway. Raised its shape is an arched wave allowing boats to pass under, while maintaining a foot passage.

The Dialogue with the Jetty, designed by MIDarchitecture sàrl, is a remarkable public space project that transforms the historical jetty along Lake Geneva into a wide ribbon of tranquility. This unique design offers a wide and generous access over its 190-meter length, providing a novel experience for people along the lakeshore.

The wooden walkway, constructed with solid oak planks, accentuates the historical structure of the original jetty. The planks have different lengths, allowing for the creation of sculpted benches that resemble wooden rocks. These benches invite multiple uses, constrained only by the creativity of the users. They offer various ways of sitting or lounging, with ergonomic considerations incorporated into their design.

One of the standout features of the Dialogue with the Jetty is the mobile footbridge. When flat, it seamlessly integrates with the walkway, but when raised, it takes on the shape of an arched wave, allowing boats to pass underneath while maintaining a foot passage. This innovative design ensures both functionality and visual appeal.

The construction of the Dialogue with the Jetty involved the use of prefab concrete for the structure, pilings, and support beams. The decking and benches are made from solid oak planks, with dimensions of 80*3800*120mm. The freestanding bench frames, designed to avoid the appearance of the ends of the planks, were pre-assembled in units measuring 1.225 meters. The entire structure is built to be accessible to all, with no steps hindering movement.

Located in Geneva, Switzerland, the Dialogue with the Jetty project was realized between November 2015 and June 2016. The design team, led by MIDarchitecture sàrl, collaborated with Ingeni SA for the structural engineering. The use of software programs like Solidworks allowed for detailed visualization and precise blueprints for the construction of the benches.

This exceptional design has been recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category. The Dialogue with the Jetty stands out for its practicality, innovation, and integration of industry best practices. It offers a fulfilling and positive experience for visitors, contributing to a better world.
